Captain (m / f)
The Eye of the Wind, a historic UK-flagged brig, is looking for an experienced master for a permanent position. The ship was built in 1911 as a topsail schooner at the Lühring shipyard in Brake/Germany and converted into a brig in the 1970s. It has been operated by Forum train & sail GmbH since 2009 and sails mainly in the North and Baltic Seas, the Canary Islands and the Caribbean. A possible circumnavigation is currently being planned. The crew consists of a captain, mate, engineer, cook, deck ratings and trainees.
Tasks and responsibilities
• Nautical ship management in compliance with the necessary safety regulations.
• Compliance with safety management and all legal regulations with regard to both ship operation and persons on board.
• Maintenance and servicing of the vessel to ensure that it is in good technical condition.
• Ensuring a first-class appearance of the ship both at sea and in port.
• Compliance with legal regulations; contacts with authorities; responsible for monitoring vessel certificates, due dates and scheduling timely surveys.
• Personnel responsibility for the international crew, assignment of tasks and their monitoring.
• Crew management: deployment and holiday planning, recruiting, hiring.
• Participation in the planning, creation and implementation of sailing and business plans.
• Management of the ship in accordance with the agreed plans and monitoring of economic operation with budget responsibility for catering, telecommunications, crew travel expenses, maintenance work, fuel and port charges, etc.
• Organisation of attractive trips for up to 12 passengers on board with active participation in shipboard life and sail training.
• Communication with and report to ship office (Merching, Germany), ship owner and the Designated Person Ashore (DPA).
• Monitoring and acceptance of services from external suppliers and service providers.
• Customer management: direct contact person on board for guests' concerns; provision of booked services. Responsible for advertising measures on board.
Your profile
Extensive experience on sailing vessels is required; practical experience with square-rigged sailing vessels is desirable. You act independently, responsibly and in a service-orientated manner. You maintain a friendly tone and have good organisational skills. Good English skills are required for communication with employees, authorities and guests; basic German skills are desirable.
Qualification
• Yachtmaster Offshore RYA/DfT or equivalent licenses according to STCW including radio operation license.
• Approved Engine Course (AEC) if available, or equivalent licenses according to STCW but not a prerequisite.
