Since the age of 26, I am working in seafaring. In Enkhuizen, the Netherlands, I attended the Seafaring School, and at the end of my entire training, I earned the title "Master (all ships)". After a long time on mechant ships, my way now led back to sailing - finally!

I come from the Canadian Prairies, a very landlocked region. I started sailing dinghies as a sea cadet in my teenage years, and my interest grew into a passion for tall ships. I started sailing tall ships in 2011 and have loved it ever since. I spent 12 years volunteering as a watch leader and bosun's mate on square riggers, and in summer 2023 I realized my dream of making sailing my profession when I joined the Eye of the Wind as a deckhand. Sailing with the Eye of the Wind is very special, as being on a small ship (well, compared to what I'm used to!) means we can go into smaller and more remote locations where bigger ships can't go. My favourite thing about being a deckhand here is working with our trainees – sharing my knowledge and experience with them, and watching them grow and develop during their time on board. My dream sailing destinations are anywhere in the colder regions – Canadian arctic, Svalbard, Antarctica ... And I would love to do a Southern Ocean crossing ending with rounding Cape Horn.

I grew up on the Orkney Islands, where I could look out over the ocean from my room. I have sailed since my earliest childhood, first on small dinghies. At the age of 10 I became a member of the local sailing club and at 15 I took part in my first sailing camp in Dartmouth/England. The program there included one week of "sail training" on a tall ship. There I got a lot of inspiration and sailing knowledge ... and in me arose the desire to travel a lot. Later I helped to refit a large schooner and spent a summer as a crew member on yachts, tall ships and schooners. During this time I was able to learn a lot from experienced sailors. I have been a crew member on the Eye of the Wind since December 2020. I quickly made new friends here and was able to get to know people from different backgrounds. I am looking forward to my first Atlantic crossing under sail, and I would also enjoy a complete circumnavigation. I find the seldom visited places of the world especially appealing. So, I am looking forward to our next sailing trip together! |

Our friendly trainees are an important part of the crew. On a voluntary basis and over a period of around 1.5 to 3 months, they support the permanent crew members in all activities required for sailing, maneuvering and maintaining the ship. This includes all work on board and, during watches on longer routes, nautical chart work. Many of our trainees come on board with extensive previous experience and can competently instruct those guests who wish to actively participate in sailing operations on deck and in the rigging on a voluntary basis. Coming from different countries, mainly Scandinavian, our trainees ensure a varied linguistic and cultural broadening of horizons among all fellow travelers. Our guests find the exchange of experiences between the generations inspiring and enriching. |
