Trip information

A special sailing trip for the Eye of the Wind, her crew and you as a guest on board: the starting point for this "journey into the past" is the small port town of Elsfleth on the Lower Weser. Just a few kilometres down the river from here, the ship was launched 115 years ago under its former name, "Friedrich". From Wesermarsch, the journey continues to Hamburg, where this traditional sailing ship had its home port from its launch in 1911 until 1916! Upon our arrival, the Hanseatic city is already in the midst of celebrating the 837th anniversary of the Port of Hamburg.

Elsfleth

Explore the charming harbour of Elsfleth, where the Hunte meets the Weser. Visit the traditional maritime museum and enjoy peaceful walks along the waterfront. Observe historic sailing ships and experience authentic maritime flair – ideal for history lovers!

In Elsfleth, you can experience maritime flair in a charming small town. Our ship was launched here in 1911, just a few kilometres down the river. Located directly at the harbour, the Maritime Museum has an exhibition illustrating the shipbuilding era of that time, the history of shipping on the Weser and maritime life in the Wesermarsch region. Interactive stations, models and original exhibits such as historical navigation devices and portraits of captains give you a vivid picture of seafaring. The old nautical school with its striking architecture dominates the townscape and stands for the long tradition as a training location for seafarers. A walk along the Weser beach offers great views of the water and passing ships. The beautiful market square and St. Nicolai Church invite you to linger.

Hamburg

Hamburg inspires with its maritime atmosphere and impressive sights: The imposing Elbphilharmonie concert hall, the historic Speicherstadt ensemble and the lively Reeperbahn characterise the cityscape. The harbour invites you to take a harbour tour, while the Binnenalster and Planten un Blomen invite you to relax.

Hamburg, Germany's "gateway to the world", fascinates visitors with a mixture of maritime history, modern architecture and vibrant city life. Among the outstanding sights is the Port of Hamburg, one of the largest seaports in Europe, which is best experienced on a harbour tour. The Elbphilharmonie in the HafenCity district impresses with its outstanding acoustics and spectacular architecture. The historical journey continues in the Speicherstadt, the largest contiguous warehouse complex in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hamburg residents and visitors alike can relax on the Inner and Outer Alster lakes. Museums, theatres and the Planten un Blomen park round off the diverse range of attractions. From 1911 onwards, Hamburg was the first home port of the Eye of the Wind, which was then called Friedrich.

Guestbook comments

I can highly recommend a sailing trip on the Eye of the Wind. This is a sailing ship straight out of a picture book, and the crew is in a great mood. You may climb to the top of the mast – 27 metres above sea level. Fabulous!"

Claus-Georg Petri
Fellow sailor and journalist, about his cruise in the South Funen Archipelago

Simply an overwhelming experience - you have to experience it.

Dr Hermann Gärlich
fellow sailor, about his voyage between Vigo and Tenerife

Here I can let go of all the tension and find myself again.

Jan Störmer
Fellow sailor, about his voyage from Stockholm through the Swedish Archipelago

Seeing this magnificent sailing ship glide through the waves powered only by the wind is an indescribable feeling. There is nothing more beautiful.
